The Association of Software Testing (AST) has been running for a number of years now. It’s what brings you amazing things such as CAST, BBST courses, some fantastic webinars and it also funds a whole host of testing community events throughout the entire world, for example, a lot of the ‘X’EWT events.
It’s with great honour that I’ve been nominated as a potential board member, having been put forward by my good friend Ale Moreira who has been on the board for the past year and is also running for membership again this year.
There are a few really great people also running for the few spots available, and the AST have now opened up their annual ritual of allowing AST members to vote for the best people that they think can do a good job on the board. The voting has now opened, so I wanted to blog about what I’d be hoping to change and influence if I was lucky enough to be elected.
So, we all know about CAST. It’s a fantastic conference that’s held annually. I has thousands of attendees, but has always been held in the Americas (mainly in the US, but is in Canada this year… This week actually).
One thing I’d be looking to do, is to try and bring CAST to Europe. There is a HUMONGOUS testing community in Europe that just don’t get the opportunity to experience CAST, which I think is a real shame. I think that it’s about time that CAST expands into Europe for this testing community to be part of the biggest AST event.
Additionally, hosting the event in Europe might actually have a positive effect on people signing up for membership in this part of the world. And if membership goes up, then the funding for other community events increases too.
The sponsorship of testing community events has been an existing positive programme that the previous board members should be proud of. They’ve done a fantastic job in being able to expand on the sponsorship that they offer. I’ve been to a few peer conferences in the UK which have been able to take place purely because of AST sponsorship.
But I’ve noticed that there are many more meetups and events, focused on testing, that the AST haven’t really made a mark in. I’d make it my mission to expand awareness within the board about these communities and events, to see if we can expand the wonderful things that the AST do into these communities and to also spread awareness within these communities of the AST too.
Additionally, with other non-testing communities from other areas of the software development world; DevOps, Continuous Delivery, Agile, etc… I think there is a lot more to be done working collaboratively with those communities to narrow the gap between the communities and to share the knowledge and lessons from each domain, which will help to ultimately build a better industry. I feel the AST is a well positioned organisation that can help with this.
I have high ambition when it comes to board membership and making some subtle but impactful changes for the better. But in order to do so, I need your votes!
In order to vote, you need to be an existing AST member. If you are a member, then you can vote by clicking on the link within the latest email that you would have received from the AST. The deadline for voting is this evening at 6pm MST (which is 1am BST on the 10/08/16).
